Early 1970s California Vehicle Sabotage and Hitchhiker killings. Additional Zodiac information and San Francisco '73 slayer. Unsolved Murders.
Is it possible the Santa Rosa slasher is connected to numerous other vehicle related killings across California. From the late 60s to early 70s young women were killed in the California Bay Area, Valley, and Los Angeles areas. These murders all featured either a act of sabotage or an abduction after car trouble. This trend then stops. In 1972 Girls hitchhiking in California's Santa Rosa area were viciously murdered. In 1973 killings of teenage and college aged San Francisco girls took place in the span of 47 days. Could the Zodiac killings of the late 1960s and early 1970s have taught killers to not leave a pattern. Changing location and technique allowed for the killer to go uncaptured. Thoughts if these could be connected ? (Links Below)
Theories on the Santa Rosa Slasher ? Theories on the San Francisco killings ? Theories on the Zodiac and did the Zodiac ever travel into Oregon or Nevada ?
List of murders Below:
The Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Killer Summary: A series of at least seven murders in the North Bay, California area, the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders occurred between 1972 and 1973. The female victims of these murders were all found nude in rural areas near steep embankments, or in creek beds along a roadside. Originally, it was thought that there were only seven victims in the case, who ranged in ages from 12 to approximately 23 years old. However, the FBI released a report in 1975 claiming that there were a series of fourteen connected homicides, which included the original seven Santa Rosa Hitchhiker murders. The cause of death for victims was typically asphyxiation due to being strangled with a cord of some nature. Many possible murder suspects were proposed, ranging from The Zodiac Killer to Ted Bundy, but no one was ever prosecuted, and the case has gone cold in Sonoma County.
Zodiac Killer Summary:
https://www.biography.com/crime-figure/zodiac-killer Theories are vast. Highly unlikely but seems to fit a pattern of changing serial killer techniques. These change as others begin. None were captured. Did the Zodiac ever travel to Oregon ?
The San Francisco Murders of ‘73 Summary:The body of Rosa Vasquez (20) was discovered close to the Arguello boulevard entrance of the Golden Gate Park on May 29th 1973. She had been strangled and thrown from the nearby road. Twelve days later, a pregnant Yvonne Quilantang (15), from Delta Street was found strangled in a Bayview district vacant lot on June 12th 1973. She had been out to buy groceries. Nancy Patricia Gidley (24) was last seen alive on Thursday July 12th 1973 leaving the Rodeway Inn at 895 Geary Street, San Francisco. Her body was found on Sunday 15th July 1973, nude and strangled in the grounds of George Washington High School in the Richmond area, although it was believed she was murdered elsewhere. Finally, Angela Thomas (16), a resident of Belton, Texas, had traveled to San Francisco for a brief stay. After a day out in Hayward she visited friends in the Presidio district- but neither of her friends were at home and she was last seen walking away at 9.00 pm on Sunday July 1st 1973. She was found naked and smothered the following day in the grounds of Benjamin Franklin Junior High School.
Almost three years earlier Donna Ann Lass disappeared from the Sahara Tahoe Hotel on September 6th 1970 after finishing her shift as a nurse. A few months earlier in June she had moved to South Lake Tahoe, from San Francisco, where she had previously been employed as a nurse at the Letterman General Hospital in the Presidio, near the Paul Stine murder scene. Curiously Rosa Vasquez was also employed at the Letterman General Hospital as a keypunch operator. There is no evidence to suggest that any of these four victims were Zodiac crimes, although there is reason enough, to consider these four murders may have been committed by a single perpetrator, due to numerous similarities, within such a short time frame.
Some researchers believe that Lawrence Kane and the Zodiac Killer may be one and the same, trailing Donna Lass from San Francisco to South Lake Tahoe, having lived at 217 Eddy Street, close to Mason and Geary Streets in San Francisco at the time of the Paul Stine murder. Latterly, working near Donna Lass at the Sahara Tahoe Hotel, according to former law enforcement officer Harvey Hines. Is it possible he returned in 1973?. Two possible murders- that of Donna Lass and Rosa Vasquez from the same hospital, inside of three years seems unusual, albeit probably coincidental. Whoever the Zodiac Killer is, may never be known- but did he continue his reign of terror beyond the murder of Paul Stine on October 11th 1969?

List of murders Below: The Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Killer Summary: A series of at least seven murders in the North Bay, California area, the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders occurred between 1972 and 1973.

The San Francisco Murders of ‘73 Summary: The body of Rosa Vasquez (20) was discovered close to the Arguello boulevard entrance of the Golden Gate Park on May 29th 1973.

Is it possible the Santa Rosa slasher is connected to numerous other vehicle related killings across California. From the late 60s to early 70s young women were killed in the California Bay Area, Valley, and Los Angeles areas. These murders all featured either a act of sabotage or an abduction after car trouble. This trend then stops. In 1972 Girls hitchhiking in California's Santa Rosa area were viciously murdered. List of murders Below: The Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Killer Summary: A series of at least seven murders in the North Bay, California area, the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders occurred between 1972 and 1973.
Zodiac Killer: Summary: https://www.biography.com/crime-figure/zodiac-killer Theories are vast. Highly unlikely but seems to fit a pattern of changing serial killer techniques. These change as others begin. None were captured. Did the Zodiac ever travel to Oregon ?
The San Francisco Murders of ‘73 Summary: The body of Rosa Vasquez (20) was discovered close to the Arguello boulevard entrance of the Golden Gate Park on May 29th 1973. She had been strangled and thrown from the nearby road. Twelve days later, a pregnant Yvonne Quilantang (15), from Delta Street was found strangled in a Bayview district vacant lot on June 12th 1973. She had been out to buy groceries. Nancy Patricia Gidley (24) was last seen alive on Thursday July 12th 1973 leaving the Rode-way Inn at 895 Geary Street, San Francisco.

Background by NMHipsterTrash
Surf Curse is an American surf punk/indie rock band from Reno, Nevada, formed by lead guitarist/vocalist Jacob Rubeck and drummevocalist Nick Rattigan. Their first two projects, Buds and Sad Boys EP, were both released in 2013. After four years and activity in their other projects (Casino Hearts, Current Joys), their second full-length, Nothing Yet, was released by Danger Collective Records on January 13th, 2017.
Heaven Surrounds You’s was announced on June 11th of this year, along with the music video for the first single, “Disco”. “Midnight Cowboy” and “Hour of the Wolf” were also released as singles. The album dropped on September 13th, 2019.
Review by NMHipsterTrash
Surf Curse’s impact is somewhat strange. The greatest gripe about it is, well, have they actually made an impact? Their popularity stems from the period of time where “Kegz-core” videos would catch in people’s YouTube algorithms, be matched with aesthetic subtitles, and rest on either Tumblr home pages or playlist websites. Surf Curse followed a cycle other lo-fi projects would, receiving popularity in this subsect of the internet. 2020 is in five days. Not a lot of artists from this time are still active. The music started to age once its audience did, and trying to capture the same magic they once did can only accomplish so much. Nothing very apparent, on a wide-scale, can separate Surf Curse from similar bands from that era and scene.
Reno, the duo’s place of origin, is an incubator. I am lucky to have called the scene home until I went to college, and it is clear that Surf Curse is integral to its style. Centered around an art exhibit/DIY spot, it’s as if Salvia Palth never broke up. At any show you can see a combination of shoestring belts, beige pants, and Lynch references. The crowd synonymous with this venue are most present at any Surf Curse-related show, and along with them they carry a strong sense of energy. Nick and Jacob are hometown heroes, for better and for worse. Teens will bring their parents to the gig and swing from the wooden rafters.
They will grow up. We all do, as long as we’re still alive. Will Surf Curse grow up? How so?
Heaven Surrounds You does not open with a bang. If anything, “Maps to the Stars” is standard fare for the duo; a simple yet sweet guitar line and driving beat, overlapped by repetitive lyrics. However, there’s something different in the atmosphere, even if it’s not necessarily clear. We listened to Nick Rattigan and Jacob Rubeck step past writing songs about making out, unreciprocated feelings, and carefree youth on Nothing Yet. How bleak and direct the first track was, “Christine F”, certainly caught fans by surprise. A sense of personal connection did feel stripped from their lyrics, and while the latest album is nowhere closer to the band’s earlier material, “Maps to the Stars” breathes the fresh air you would circling Lake Tahoe. The frenzied performance that we can come to expect is blanketed by synth, and the words sung up to that point is, at its heart, a love poem centered around a movie reference.
It would be absurd to deny the influence film has on their work. Not only does it say on their bandcamp that this record “expands the band’s songwriting to envelope new audiences in their cinematic sound”, but a lot of the songs on here share a title with an evident movie. “Labyrinth”, for example. Not a far cry from its predecessor, but now the atmosphere feels distinct. The band’s sound is more full than ever. There’s so much air to it. The instrumental break at 1:30 is a perfect accompaniment to the bounce of Bowie’s crotch bulge. “Maps to the Stars” and “Labyrinth” work as opening shots to a film of their own. We are hooked, but what is going to happen? Where are the two going to go? What do we expect?
Fucking bass.
When it was released as the lead single, “Disco” was recognized as an evident departure from their sound. First of all, fucking bass. There’s an emphasis on a groove we’ve never had. Paired with Rattigan’s vocals, “Disco” emanates the protagonist's elbow shake, hips nearing their love interest, their heart spilling out through the chorus’ falsetto. As Surf Curse wring out their new style, celluloid drips between their fingers. “River’s Edge” forwards the plot in a relatively calm and introspective manner. Lines like “I hope I can hear you sing/when I’m sick of everything” and “Where nothing is ever said/and all the people never forget/all the things you never said” resonate pain throughout the final yell, but catharsis sought by an overbearing instrumental finish is subdued by synth . Once again. Yet again.
Surf Curse are pulling on their roots. “Midnight Cowboy” and “Hour of the Wolf” are standout tracks for subverting familiarity. For Rubeck’s first stint as a vocalist on here, the guitar remains light in the mix (bass takes the front seat), reminiscent of surfier tracks like “Haunt Me”. The song holds an indie rock structure, something actually fleshed out compared to surf punk. However, Rubeck’s delivery and final refrain harken back to the youthful passion their old sound had. On the other hand, “Hour of the Wolf” is what I imagine doing coke is like. Not an implication of any person associated with Surf Curse’s lifestyle. It’s hard to explain. Something among the lines of envisioning faces falling off as time moves fast yet you feel younger than ever. Something like that. You know?
Anyways.
We enter the back half of the album after experiencing six of the strongest tracks in the band’s discography. Each one feels as if they serve as a soundtrack for their own, individual short film. The precedent has been set, and instead of trying to twist their formula even more, they decide to capitalize on their new gains. “Dead Ringers” features a punchy, back-and-forth riff with dreamy and brief lyrics. There is room for the protagonist to continue their journey with no wasted space. It lives up to its name, in which the film it soundtracks has a faint smell of Cronenberg. Not entirely, but it’s there.
Rattigan’s croon on “Safe” is a cry. We’ve heard it before when all was lost, forever dumb, or when Surf Curse were just freaks. While the juvenile nature of those emotional calls carried a scent of B.O. thinly veiled by deodorant, “I’m safe alone” is masked with cologne. For a two minute track, every second is filled with passion. The band nails simplicity as if it was six, five years ago, and no time was lost. “Memory” strikes nostalgia by using exposition (for the first time so far in the film!) amidst solid dream-pop instrumentation. Catchy as always, what’s important to note are the final chunk of lines. Songwriters usually use unique life experiences to evoke a deep sentiment. What’s weird is, although we can tell this is close to Rubeck’s heart, this is an exact moment in time I’ve experienced. What’s weirder is that I know more people who have also experienced it. The emotional truth, and the overarching effect of it in “Memory”, “was just so damn good”.
We can find the most cinematic moments within the final three tracks. “Opera” opens with acoustic guitar and has the space of a modern Current Joys track. Imagery of desperation and loss are painted by the descriptions of bondage, heartbreak, and wanting closure. The backing vocals on the second half adds an extra layer of what’s being articulated, and the dreamy, synth-filled ending shared with other tracks feels completely natural. A transition, sonically and tonally, to “Trust” has the listener dancing. We are moving on ground level, the dance floor, in the moment. Once baby takes a chance on the protagonist, the oo’s right after freeze time. We are at the climax. The protagonist knows what they want. The protagonist knows what they need.
“Jamie”. Eleven songs, scenes, films, have passed. Although it sits as the longest track at nearly five minutes, this is the Surf Curse we have come to expect. They let their lyrics soak in the time allotted. A wide range of emotions were expressed in moments of urgency, nostalgia, and loneliness. To hear Rubeck and Rattigan sing, in full confidence, “I love all the people in my life/All my friends keep me alive” before soundtracking an 80’s movie finish, accomplishes something for every party involved.
On the bandcamp page, Heaven Surrounds You is described as a “coming-of-age epic”. What makes coming-of-age stories evocative is when there’s an understanding of the emotions involved. If it’s relatable, it is real. Surf Curse is not telling a random coming-of-age story, but their own. They balanced a mature presentation while wearing their hearts on their sleeves every scene.
Surf Curse grew up, and remained personal as ever.

Hey are you gonna find me
Look on the maps to the stars
Oh my heart is on fire
Burn whoever you are
But I can't touch your skin
It burns with the shitty grin of Zeus
And heaven surrounds you
Cause it hurts so much to close my eyes
But I never wanna watch you die
And I’d rather make myself go blind
Then stare into your dying eyes
So I’ll close mine
Talking Points
- Surf Curse has stepped away from its gritty surf punk style. Do you believe this was a step in the right direction?
- If you could pick any song to be your “Tumblr theme”, which one would it be? Why?
- Is it important for a band to “mature”?
- Do songs, from any band, ever paint movie scenes for you?
- Are there any unsung classics from the Kegzcore era that should have gotten more attention?
Thanks again to nmhipstertrash for the terrific writeup! Tomorrow in this space, we'll have yoooooouuuuuuuu to talk about Avey Tare's newest solo album, Cows on Hourglass Pond. In the meantime, if you wanna discuss today's album, you can in the comments below! Thanks for reading, see you tomorrow!

My Idea for GTA 6
It'll be HUGE.
How huge? It'll have the biggest map in the series, encompassing the whole state of San Andreas (including Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas, and a new city called San Joseph, based on San Jose), with locations you can access by taking a plane to, including Liberty City, Vice City, Carcer City, North Yankton, even locations north and south of the border.
This time, there will be SIX protagonists, these being Michael, Franklin, Trevor, Niko, Taliana Martinez, and an aged, HD Universe version of Tommy Vercetti.
We'll also find out what has happened since GTA V:
- The De Santa family has become a crime family, with Michael as the head, Amanda as the accountant, Tracey as the legal front, and Jimmy as the specialist. They still live in their mansion in the Rockford Hills, still keep in contact with Dave and Lester, and are all happy. In fact, Michael is now contracted by the FIB and IAA to carry out false flag terrorism so the government can justify some new law or new war overseas. He also works for Trevor Philips Enterprises, using his new boat he bought as a coastal tramper to move drugs and guns by sea. Michael also still works in the movies with Solomon,
- Franklin is now married to Ursula (the hitch hiker in V), having bonded over family issues, and works for Trevor Philips Enterprises smuggling illicit goods to and from the Port of Los Santos; these goods range from drugs and guns, to more minor things like bootleg films and games or even just regular, legal goods. Franklin still lives at 3671 Whispymound Drive, but has since vastly expanded it. Franklin has also managed to finally get along with Denise, due to bonding over street racing (Denise was quite the racer in her day).
- Trevor has become the sole provider of drugs in Los Santos and Blaine County, and is now looking to expand to San Fierro and Las Venturas. He'll have to deal with the various Chinese and Vietnamese gangs in San Fierro, and the mobster families in Las Venturas, but he's ready. In addition, Trevor also deals in other goods now, including meat-packing (alongside Cletus), bounty-hunting, scrap metal, and of course, still owns the Vanilla Unicorn (and poor Wade is still there). Trevor still lives in his trailer in Sandy Shores, still has Ron as his next door neighbor and second-in-command, and now has Patricia Madrazo living with him, after Martin abused her one too many times.
- Niko went off the radar, but never actually stopped his life of crime. Making connections in Carcer City, Bellic Enterprises is now a front for a massive criminal organization. But after the IAA basically rooted out his operations in Carcer, and finding out Karen masterminded it, Niko gets Lester's help and tracks her down to Los Santos. Dragging Roman, Mallorie, and their daughter Kate with him, and praying there are no bowling alleys there, Niko sets out not only expand Bellic Enterprises, but get revenge on Karen for not only leading him on as Michelle, but also destroying everything he had worked to build in Carcer.
- After the Union Depository job, Taliana was rich beyond her wildest dreams. Rather than retire, though, she went further, creating her own criminal organization friendly to Trevor Philips Enterprises specializing in boosting, modifying, and reselling cars. This operation has been quite profitable, and she plans to expand to San Joseph, where smug, condescending tech people live with cars she can quickly flip. She's also constantly tangling with the US government, who want to deport her to Mexico even though she's a legal citizen
- Tommy Vercetti is a washed-up crime boss. After the massive success of the Vercetti Gang in the late 80s, he was run out of Vice City by Wei Cheng Sr. After learning of the death of Cheng, Tommy decided it was time to get back into the game, establishing a foothold on Carcer City in the wake of the IAA operation that drove out Bellic Enterprises, with the ultimate goal of getting back to Vice City.
We also get to see how the NPCs are doing:
- Dave is still head of the FIB, and still hosts Underbelly of Paradise, but is also involved with false flag terrorism via Michael.
- Lester was able to bribe Humane Research Labs to uncover the cure for cancer, which the government had ordered them to withold for "population control" reasons, also uncovering a procedure that cured his wasting disease. He is still heavily involved with Trevor Philips Enterprises, and is now lining up jobs to rob big targets, such as Maze, Pacific Standard (having had alot of experience and backdoors left over from the job pulled in 2013), every Fleeca branch in the state, and even every single casino in Las Venturas, one by one.
- Lamar is still the same-old Leeroy Jenkins, with that Apache blood
- Tonya got clean, but JB never did; both were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide
- Tanisha realized that her brain surgeon husband was merely using her as a trophy wife, so she divorced his ass and tried to go back to Franklin, but by then, he was married to Ursula; she will stalk Franklin throughout the game, and you have the choice of either letting it continue, chewing her out, or simply putting a bullet in her head
- The Families are planning to retake Grove Street from the Ballas, with guns bought from Trevor
- The Yellow Jacket Inn is no more; after Trevor was banned again, he did what he does best and burned it to the ground
- Johnny K. is revealed to still be alive, but extremely pissed off at Trevor; he serves as one of the principal antagonists as he and the Lost MC wage war on Trevor Philips Industries across Blaine County, a war the police are powerless to stop, and escalates once TPI takes over Fort Zancudo, thus dragging the US Army into a domestic conflict they rightfully want no part in
- Simeon Yetarian does not canonically die, and he returns as the main antagonist for Taliana, as her racket in San Joseph directly competes with his new credit fraud
- Tao Cheng is now the head of his late father's criminal empire; he's still an x-nut, but now dangerously so, and he has it out for Trevor, while also being targeted by Tommy
So, to recap:
- Protagonists: Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, Trevor Philips, Taliana Martinez, Niko Bellic, Tommy Vercetti
- Antagonists: Karen Daniels, Johnny Klebitz, Tao Cheng, Simeon Yetarian
- Cities: Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas, San Joseph, Liberty City, Vice City
- Rural areas: Blaine County, Bone County, Angel County, a Lake Tahoe analogue, North Yankton, Florida Everglades
So, whaddaya think?

[REQ] ($500-$1,000) - (#LakeTahoe, CA, USA) - ($60+/mo + interest starting 6/7/19) (Venmo) Please read the whole post before judging me.
I know this is a long shot. I posted in
assistance as well with a different form of repayment (see lower part of post).
I need between $500-$1000 (for partial) or full rent (due no later than the 3rd), plus the means to get back on track financially. I can afford $60/month until paid off, but will DEFINITELY PAY MORE when I make more - ideally a lump sum. Just need to stick within my means right now, to an amount I'm 100% able to commit to. You choose a fair amount for interest.
Edit: I'm sorry this got so long! I felt like it's important to explain all contibuting factors of why I'm in this situation and what I have to offer. Lord knows it's not because I don't try - I'm trying myself to death!
Let me preface this by saying that where I live is too expensive for me, probably too expensive for most middle class people. But after 11 years living here, I cannot simply move because of shared custody with my 10 year old daughter. Trust me, I've tried. It will lead straight to a messy court battle that I'd prefer to avoid, especially for her sake. My daughter's dad and I have maintained an amicable custody agreement since she was 2 years old without going to court. Most importantly, she was born and raised here, therefore her school and friends are here. Because she has to go back and forth between our homes, we want to keep everything else as stable as possible. I grew up going back and forth, and when my mom put me in a new school at my daughter's same age, I hated it. I wasn't happy at home or school anymore. Pre-teen years are difficult enough.
We live in North Lake Tahoe. Although it's an expensive place to live, I do find solace raising a child within our small, actively-based community. Her dad and I both have considered moving to Reno (40 mins away), but within the past couple years, Reno has exploded and rent there is now comparable to Tahoe. I know enough people who have made the move and aren't doing much better, especially if they're paying (~$5/gal) for gas to commute up and down the hill each day.
So here I am, paying $1000/month for a studio, which is about the going rate. I have tried the roommate thing a few times. I held the lease at my last place for 3 years while renting out the second bedroom. We each paid $850 plus utilities. Renting a room here is easily between $700-$1000. Because I have a child, sharing a home isn't ideal for most people, plus it's not much less than having our own place. Even if it is a only a studio, my daughter and I love it here. And that's what I mean about raising her here - she can't care less about material things. We spend most of our free time outside anyway.
I work FT at a pretty good job, plus PT at another. During the winter, I was working 2 FT jobs, plus the one PT. Working multiple jobs here is common (and necessary) for many locals. Since my second FT job is only seasonal, I've been digging myself into a hole financially. Mentally and physically. Working 3 jobs killed me and I don't know if I can bear doing it again. Of course it also took a toll on my daughter. Because I'm constantly stressed out about money, my existing depression and anxiety only intensifies everything. My daughter shouldn't think this is normal. Genetics aside, I don't want her growing up thinking this is what happens when you're stressed out, or that life is this scary. She's been the one to help me through anxiety attacks, sometimes being with me at the ER because of a prolonged one.
So rent is due today and I'm thankful she's with her dad this weekend. I have $70 in my bank account until next Friday. My pay schedule is never in sync with my daughter's schedule with me, so she's used to me having no extra money. Which really, I never have extra money. I've had to keep asking my work for advances, which means there's a cut in my paycheck. Last month I couldn't pay rent until the 10th and my landlord was not happy. Because my lease is month to month, she can basically end it at any time with only 30 days notice. This makes me extremely worried because finding affordable housing here is near impossible. I've looked into emergency rental assistance, and our county currently has nothing to help.
To make matter worse, my daughter's dad quit paying child support last month. We are going to court for this in a couple weeks. This is the one thing that causes tension between us, but having child support helps me out significantly.
Lately, I've been busting my ass looking for side work, which has helped, but not nearly enough yet.
Because I work in property management, I've been looking for vacation home owners who I can personally help manage their AirBnBs. Tahoe is overloaded with vacation homes and I've been in this business for over ten years. This can be something to offer a kind Redditor in exchange for them helping me pay rent.
I'm also a caretaker on Rover. If you're ever on vacation in Tahoe, I'd love to help with your doggos. Many vacation rentals and hotels don't allow pets. Childcare too. I love kiddos and have worked as a nanny and on-call sitter many times. Overnight as well. Some parents want to ski or mountain bike without their kids, or have a night out. I'll make sure your kids are safe and have fun. Mini golfing, movie theater, rollerskating, bowling, swimming at the rec center, or visiting animals at the shelter is my daughter's favorite.
Lastly, if you ever want to come to Tahoe, I'd happily give up my studio for you to stay in. I mean, like a week or 2 max is fair. It's super cute and only 2 blocks from the lake. Plus it's pet friendly! The little town I live in has nice sandy beaches and everything you need is within walking distance, including the casinos.
So, if there's a generous Redditor reading, who understands my situation, please reach out so we can discuss this further. I don't expect anyone to help me, but if it happens I would probably drop dead out of joy and gratefulness (haha but I'll still have to pay rent).
Either way if you made it this far, I really appreciate you taking the time to read. If anything, please send prayers and positive vibes my way to help me overcome these obstacles both financially and mentally. Any kind of support means the world to me.
